It's not that you have to take aspirin with Lipitor it's that they're doing two separate things.

Lipitor is to reduce the LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood, and increase the HDL cholesterol. LDL will deposit on your artery walls, particularly around the heart and extremities. HDL will help scavenge some of the LDL. Teh LDL deposits are referred to as plaques. They may form clumps or may spread in diffuse layers inside the cardiac arteries.

Aspirin on the other hand makes your red blood cells less sticky and less prone to clotting. Blood will commonly clot around plaque clumps, which can then break away and cause a heart attack or stroke. Aspirin therefore reduces the blood's ability to clot enough to significantly reduce your risk of stroke or heart attack.

When you have a heart attack, blood clots commonly form around damaged parts of the heart muscle ... and so they commonly give lots of aspirin to reduce that risk.

So, the Lipitor and aspirin are used for two different problems.
