The INR number is the normalized time to clot blood. The higher the number the thinner your blood, the lower the number, the faster your blood clots.

Now, foods can impact the effectiveness of blood thinners. In particular those containing vitamin K ... which is found in leafy green foods, such as spinach, cabbage etc. Beware too of multivitamins.

The impact of diet can cause very quick changes in your blood's clotting properties, like sugar causes quick changes in blood sugar. This means that the best way to check out changes in INR that are worrisome is to repeat the test at a different time.

When taking blood thinners like warfarin (coumadin) you need to maintain a consistent diet. If you like foods rich in vitamin K, eat a small amount consistently. Don't have none for days and then have a big portion on one day, because that's going to impact your INR numbers.

If your INR numbers don't remain consistent, then it's probably time to adjust the amount of the meds.

Talk with your doctor.
