Well you won't be reading this but you really should plonk the guy that posted the page of all his references to Dr. Phil and his predictions of what Dr. Phil would come up with.

I don't resent Phil McGraw any more than all the others who have tried to capitilize on we poor souls that struggle a lifetime with obesity.

I think ASD even though, the advice varies widely, is more of a help to me because all those diet guys seem to ride on waves of trends. At least on ASD we have a dialogue and analyze our objections or support of each others ideas. We clear up misconceptions, give encouragement and tell the truth as we see it. And all for just the monthly ISP fee, plus we get to use our computers for a variety of other things.

I don't think Dr. Phil beats little children or deals drugs. He just doesn't capture my interest. Maybe it's a question of "style."

Now I saw Dr, Atkins on TV several times and although he was no fireball personality wise, he knew his stuff and I respected that.
I don't say that because I am a follower of the Atkins Diet because I am not on it. But being here since 1996 I've seen many great results and really enjoyed periodic visits to alt. support.diet.low-carb.

As to being bitter, I may be a critical person, but certainly not bitter. My only regret is not having lost the weight earlier in life to have enjoyed the benefits longer.

I'm glad you plonked me if I irritate you as people should seek pleasure, not annoyance if they want to get ahead with things.

That would be a good idea if I didn't normally cook my chicken on my George
Foreman grill. I tend to avoid marinading food before I grill it on the GF because I find it makes it much more difficult to clean. I do add hoi sin sauce after the chicken is grilled somtimes, but I'm normally cooking it to go in something else, so it doesn't matter too much

But good tip for other cooking methods, thanks.

For me, it depends on what it is. I can't just give up something like chocolate. I may not have it every day now, but I do need some here and there so that I don't get too fixated on it.

When I quit the mountain dew, it was completely different.I knew I would have caffiene withdrawel since I had experienced it when visiting my exchange sister in Mexico (no mountain dew in her town).
So, I knew on one other drink that I liked that had caffiene. It is
"Rain" by snapple. Not quite as much caffiene, and no carbonated, so I could suck on one bottle all day to lower my caffiene intake without having bad headaches.

Well, I did that for 2 days. One bottle of Rain at work all day, and water at home. The 3rd day, I got to work, and there was no Rain. Uh oh. I bought the water. I knew I had some chocolate in my locker, some
Godiva extra dark, so I decided to do an experiment. I'd see how long
I could go before the headache started and then eat the chocolate. I never got the headache. Since then, I have not have a bottle or Rain or Mountain Dew. And when I look at Mountain Dew, it looks gross to me now.

Somewhere along the line, I finally turned on it as a horrible source of caffiene, extra weight, and wasted money. Something I loved for 15 years is now disgusting to me. I wish I could do that to chocolate or cheese, but that will take some doing.

Several people can teach the same thing, but we will learn better from some and not so well from others. It depends on how they present it.
We have different learning styles, and we tend to teach in the same style we learn in. So, it helps if we find people who teach the way we learn.

Thank you for posting that, Tonia. I have begun to notice how small choices can contibute to a big out come. I can remember feeling that a regular size sandwich, potatoe cakes, a large soda, and mozzerella sticks weren't enough food! I'm glad I have come to see how wrong that was.

Amazingly, I feel many times better eating far less food. I will never eat that much again. I love portion control.

Thanks. I'm sure some of them will never become disgusting to me. How could chocolate ever earn that title? I do hope that I can achieve that to some level eventually with fried foods. I am very much in love with fried food. And some things just aren't any good without cheese.

More realisticly, I am hoping that I can learn to love some new healthier foods, and those will replace some of my old staples. So, the rule will become the exception and vice versa.

Sounding off again about rules, exclusions etc. They make you self conscious and fixated on what you will or won't eat all day long so it's just the reverse of the food obsession coin only it's the "not the food" side.

What has worked well for me is to shop for a whole bunch of suitable food at a time except produce which doesn't last long. Prior to a meal
I can be somewhat governed by cravings which means having what I want.

instead of eating what I might have planned, even though I've lost my desire on Wednesday for the menu I planned Monday, my choices will be good. So will my meal because I've developed skill for rapid prepartion of very good recipes that don't need to be on paper.

Every night I just pull some packaged animal protein from the freezer to the fridge, often two or three things giving me some choice. The next day I grab what's handy and start cooking. I always have some green and yellow veggies on hand and a salad mix as well as some fruit and homemade yogurt and salad dressing so however I use them it's going to ensure nutritional balance. Because I can't use bread, flour, pasta and other refined carbohydrayes and I am not crazy about baked goods with almond flour, this assortment will fall within certain calorie limits automatically. AndI don't stint with oil and butter in cooking.
Remember I am not slathering it on bread!

My biggest daily splurge is 1/2 cup homemade yogurt from 2% milk with a spoon of peanut butter in it, some crushed pecans and a shot of honey.
This goopy sundae is delicious and very nutritious.

Please note the words above "what has worked well for me" I

It's a YMMV world and I fully expect responses about all the reasons that does not work for you.

My point is :Find something that works for you" and put it in practice.
Not something Dr. Phil lifted from somewhere else without giving credit and that he probably doesn't do himself because he could not possbly have the time.

Strict rules were made to be broken. If I had to do that old behavior mod stuff like putting my fork down between every bite. I'd throw it on the floor and eat with my fingers!

I've always seen it in the regular candy aisle. I've only had it two or three times. Once I bought a bag and found myself wanting the whole thing after a few pieces so I threw it out. I tend toward the small, low carb candy bars that are already in a single serving size and also sugar free.

Reminds me of what DH says - anything tastes good covered in cheese or wrapped in bacon.

Given time and practice, it should. I don't eat fried foods and I don't miss them. There have been a few times when given the choice between something healthy or not, I've chosen the healthy option because of taste preference, not because "it's the right thing to do."

I don't think saying YMMV and this works for me and may not for others is squelching. People are always curious about how maintenance members here cope. What I post about how I manage sure is all about me cause I know all about me but i don't know all about you. Maybe Dr, Phil does.

Restrictive rules are hard to follow for a lifetime.. Most can apply some very concentrated focus and dedication at the start and for a certain period of time, but it is important to develop an automatic pilot eventually.

Every year when I get on here in January, the story is the same and so are selected responses. I'm manic, bitchy, self involved, give smart ass answers etc. etc. Well, you have worse 'trolls" on board with lesser success.

You will no longer be victimized by my "unwelcome" diet and maintenance theories and tone of expression until I have maintained for ten years if I am still alive. Keep on making dieting complicated.

"What was I thinking"?

Barnes and Noble has my blessing to break all records on the sale of diet books in 2004.
