Question from a nutritional ignoramous ... I have a can of Pepsi Max in front of me - it says it has no fat and only 0.8 calories per 100ml. So, if
I drank 5 litres of that a day then would I get fat? If so, why? (and yes this is a hypothetical question, I don't have any plans to do so!).

The fat in your body is not the same as the fat you consume. Its not like you eat a tablespoon of lard and that is stored in your body as fat.

So, if you drink 5 liters of pepsi max a day, and you consume approximately
400 cals in pepsi (if my calculations are correct - 1lt = 1000 ml, right?), but if its .8 for 100ml... then does that mean that 5 lt is 40 cals...
That sounds better.

So - I think it is 8 cals per ltr. making it 40 cals for 5lt. 40 cals over the course of a day is a small amount in the grand scheme of how much you eat. And probably not enough to really equate to alot of weight gain.
40 cals is about the equivilant to 1/2 a slice of bread. Or a whole tomato, or 1/2 ounce of cheese, or onebitesized piece of chocolate.

But take into consideration all the chemical you are consuming by consuming
5 ltrs of pepsi max a day. Good golly. The crap you are putting into our system. Not to mention the saccrine or aspertame or whatever.

I've never heard of Pepsi Max, but I'll assume it's similar to Pepsi
One (their diet cola in the U.S.). According to the Pepsi web site:
http://www.pepsi.com/pepsi_brands/product_info/ pepsione/index.php

Pepsi ONE (8 fl. oz)
Contains: Carbonated water, caramel color, natural and artificial flavors, phosphoric acid, aspartame, citric acid, sodium benzoate (preserves freshness), caffeine and acesulfame potassium

Calories 1
Total Fats (g) 0
Sodium (mg) 30
Potassium (mg) 20
Total Carbohydrates (g) 0
Sugars (g) 0
Protein (g) 0
Caffeine (mg) 37

An 8 oz. serving in the U.S. is about the same as 236ml -- divide 5000ml (or 5 liters) by this number and you get about 21.2 eight oz. servings.
That would yield 21.2 calories, with little to no protein, fats, or carbs. So no, one would not get "fat" from drinking 5 liters per day, assuming they didn't eat 21 burgers or bags of potato chips to go with it.

Why anyone would *want* to drink that much, however, I couldn't say...

Here in the UK we have Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and Pepsi Max. Anyway, ta all for the replies - it was just that so much is being said about the effects of excessive fizzy drinks consumption & contribution to obesity that it made me wonder if this would be the case if someone just drank Pepsi Max. Sounds like probably not - but yep the rest of the content, incl. phosphoric acid, probably wouldn't be too good for someone or their teeth at that quantity!!
