In theory, the devices that work by measuring tissue engorgement will work, but in practice there are many problems. Using the ear lobe on a more or less stationary subject gets rid of many of the variables, but it still isn't a highly accurate technique.
If you like gadgetry, one of the Polar devices would be better. Personally, a finger and a wristwatch works fine for me, especially on an exercise

I just wanted to find out whether those pulse meters that you get with exercise bikes that clip onto your ear actually work, if anyone with any experience could help.
Cheers.

I have personally found them to be extremely innacurate by as much as 30% and not worth using even as a rough indicator. If you seriously wish to monitor your heart rate I would advise any one of the Polar units with chest transmitter. It will perform many useful monitoring functions and will be a good exercise motivator.

I've just had a sudden thought on these Polar HRMs... Is anyone worried about whatever disease you're meant to get from mobile phones with these things transmitting so close to the body?

Cel phones use microwaves, and use enough energy to transmit over distances of many miles. Heart rate monitors use radio, and transmit with only enough energy to reach from your wrist to your chest.

My Polar is 2 years old and have only had to replace the reciever batt. once. It gives readings of HR, Upper limit, Lower limit with optional sound and a clock. It works for me at $130
