Hi, just a quick question from a diet newbie...does drinking lots of water really make you lose weight? or does it JUST stop you getting hunger pangs?

Many times people mistake the bodies signals for thirst (dehydration) for hunger and eat when they didn't need to. If you drink more water, you will probably eat less and lose weight.

Many people don't drink enough water anyway. Water is essential for most of the body's processes to work properly so the water might help with weight loss even if you ate the same amount of food.

Weight loss is a complicated issue and people eat for reasons other than hunger like habit, socializing and psychological issues etc.

No.

or does it JUST stop you getting hunger pangs? I don't think lots of water works that well.

If you want to stop hunger pangs, one approach would be to eat more low glycemic foods such as vegetables.

Use www.dogpile.com to learn more about this.

The best article I have ever seen on this topic is at the Dr. Squat site. It is called the ZigZag Diet.

I lost 50 pounds years ago by losing one pound per month. Although I got back to my proper weight before reading the ZigZag Diet, I basically followed the principles in that article.

Plus, the *news* programs are reporting a new study that shows that many people who feel hungry are actually thirsty - 'hunger' is how the brain translates the message.

Recommendation was that if you feel hungry before bed or wake up feeling hungry to have a glass of water.

Can I just point out that the statement about hydration is ridiculous. If you are 'properly' hydrated, you are normal, therefore your metabolism is normal. The statement should be that if you fail to maintain proper hydration, you will LOWER your metabolism. You don't increase it by hydrating to normal since, by definition, that is the norm.

I see what you mean. I think Diana is just pointing out the on the average (normally) people are under hydrated. Kinda like average normal weight is larger than ideal normal weight.

It is true that most people do not drink enough water. As in water by itself. If you consider that every metablic process down to most basic level in the body requires water, you realise that a lot of pur water is needed. Even if you are 'normallly' hydrated, this still doesnt mean you have enough water in you to keep all processes at a optimal level. A minimal level

I wouldn't argue with this

Your metabolism will be elevated by the extra work being done by your kidneys, bladder and mostly by you walking back and forth to the water cooler and the bathroom.

Good point - even if I wasn't the one who made the statement you are disputing! 8-)

I think the point the folks reporting the studies are trying to make is that what most folks *consider* 'proper hydration' is not...IOW, we need a lot more water than we are giving ourselves.

A debate I engage in with other cat owners on a regular basis 'Oh, s/he'll get enough water on her/his own'. Err - maybe - but I'd rather make sure of it - I've seen the results of FLUTD, and how pushing 'excess' water can keep bladder problems away, and help overweight cats lose weight.
