Supersize Sabotage by Gloria McVeigh
What would make you keep eating stale, 2-week-old popcorn? Answer:
having lots of it. That was the surprise finding in one of two new studies at the University of Illinois. Researchers gave 184 moviegoers dried-out popcorn, half in medium tubs (11 cups) and half in large (22 cups). Even those people who complained about the taste ate two-thirds more out of gigantic cartons than out of midsize ones. In a second study of 64 people given soup, half of the soup bowls refilled automatically, but too slowly to be noticed. Those eaters with bottomless bowls slurped 40% more soup (185 extra calories).
Bottom line: Learn what a normal portion looks like, and just eat that much.
