Hi

Just recently been told that I have high blood pressure and have been put on Accupril to try to control it. My Doctor has not told me to change anything about my workout routuine. (It is typically 3-4 days a week aerobics/step/interval training, and at least 2x a week weights)

I was talking to one instructor, and she was telling me that my heatrate would now be lower when I am exercising. Is this true? I really don't have much to go on now, since I had a busy past few days, and have not done any classes since I have gotten on the meds. (Only on meds for 4 days now) Well I guess I'll see today, since I can finally take an aerobic class, and not just lift.

Any suggestions in this manner would be appreciated.

Thanks

She may have meant that now that you have started exercising your RESTING heartrate will become lower which is true.

Jacy would know more about this than I, though.

Hello Jeff. I saw your message. I wanted to tell you that you are taking a medication called an Ace inhibitor. This medication will not have an effect on your Heart rate or exercise capacity.

Great topic! I was just about to ask the same general question. I have mild high blood pressure and several days ago beagn taking 50mg of Ateno, a beta blocker.. My doctor said there would be no'significant' side affects. I immediately began feeling somewhat fatigued but thought it was a cold or my imagination. I definetly noticed a change in my energy level while running. I run(actually plod) five miles, three to four times a week and have for many years. Since starting the medication I feel like my legs weigh a ton and have had to shorten my runs and even had to walk because of fatigue. I was particularly interested in Densie Howard's comment about feeling like you're working twice as hard at the lower heart rate. That's me. I know this is a question for my doctor but where do I go from here? I have to run but can't continue like this. I'm wondering if this side affect will diminish? It seems particularly odd that, as we all know, aerobic exercise often lowers blood pressure, etc, etc, yet the medication to lower blood pressure has a negative affect on the ability to exercise. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Ateno is the beta-blocker that I have personal experience with. It does depress the heartrate, unlike Accupril, an ace-inhibitor, a different class of drug.

No, it will not diminish. Talk to your doctor.

Well, you're comparing apples and oranges, here. There's no relation between the heartrate-lowering that improved fitness brings about, and the heartrate-lowering that beta blockers bring about. The beta-blocker variety is a harmless side effect, not an intended result.
