Due to high blood pressure I recently had a full blood test including
Fasting Lipids, my cholesterol came out at 7.9 mmol/litre.

It was requested that I not eat anything 12 hours before the blood sample was taken, but no mention was made of alcohol. I have just read in a book that no alcohol should be consumed within 72 hours of a test for fasting lipids.

I did have a few drinks (1.5 pints of beer) within 15 hours of the test, would this have affected the result.

Thank you. That is one of the reasons I take synthroid (high lipids) along with family hx of HypoT, symptoms...slow metabolism... My labs are usually normal but I always talk my doc into giving me moderate level synthroid Rx and I feel better on it. The thyroid is a mysterious gland.

I do not know the scientific reasons just know that many hypothyroid patients only get diagnosed when a test shows high cholesterol levels ..........give the patients the right Thyroid meds and the cholesterol level returns to normal as does any heart problems that often also present with undiagnosed hypothyroid

I know because despite a very low fat diet my cholesterol was thru the roof ........my TSH was in "normal range " as was Free T4 .....yet i had levels of all 3 Thyroid Antibodies thru the roof

Besides increasing lipid level by what other mechanism could hypothroid increase BP?

That may well not be the whole picture
I guess all they did was TSH and that can be "normal" for 6 years despite the patient having high cholesterol ,a bunch of hypothyroid symptoms and positive tests for thyroid antibodies ................theres an article in the Lancet about this

Hypothyroid can also frequently be a cause of BP and high cholesterol
